I'd like to start off by paying respect to Gary Gygax. I didn't know much about him, but it's apparent that he was a great influence on the RPG scene, and some even say he created it, which is a great achievement! Such a person is legendary in my eyes.
Now, on to less depressing stuff!
I was born in the 1990s, 1991 to be specific. Back then, video games were cool, lots of good ideas. The graphics weren't too good, but that didn't matter much because it was about the gameplay and the story.
Towards the end of the 1990s, and the beginning of 2000, consumers and critics started focusing heavily on graphics. As did manufacturers of consoles and games. People even used the graphics card (no pun intended) in debates concerning which console or game was better.
It sure is damn nice to have good graphics! I really appreciate good graphics, because they're nice to look at, and I know that graphics are difficult to get really good in-game. Unfortunately, due to this heavy focus on graphics, it seemed to me that very few good games were released. Well less good games than in previous years.
There have been a few excellent games since the focus on graphics really got massive, but even then it wasn't like they were the best game ever, apart from maybe half life 2.
8 or more years of heavy focus has, however, and thankfully, caused graphics to improve vastly. Unreal Tournament 3 has exquisite graphics. The details are... well, detailed. Everything looks shiney, and smooth, unless it isn't meant too
But it seems as though we have reached some sort of milestone. I say this because we seem to have more good games coming out in the future, and some good games have been released recently. The orange box contained excellent games with graphics on parr with the industry, most current console games have great graphics and there are several good games planned for release, and already released.
This makes me happy, as it seems that new life is being breathed into the game industry once more! This might be what you would call a newness in life! Spore and Grand Theft Auto 4 are both being released this year (last I checked), Gears of War 2 is being developed, Final Fantasy is always being reproduced again (which I have honestly never been a fan of, but many are).
I just hope this continues, I hope that there are more good games planned. I hear that Crysis has the best graphics yet, but lacks in story, so Crysis is a perfect example of what I haven't enjoyed in the past few years.
Well, only time can tell. Here's hoping we have a good few years of gaming ahead of us!
